P020 → Speak Like No One in Particular

Speak Like No One in Particular is a conversational performance and live radio broadcast about listening and finding a voice to speak. Staging a  lyrical conversation about the power, politics and geography of listening, Eszter Némethi is constructing a territory, a text for collective reading by a participating audience and broadcast for a listener afar. Playing with two differently engaged audiences (reading and listening) and a formal frame between radio and theatre, the piece opens a space for conversation about the politics of speaking and listening, voicing and belonging and how this relates to integration, emancipation and xenophobia.

How do you prefer to be listened to? Do you ever feel like you are speaking against a wind?
Whose words do you repeat? Who do you have to become in your many languages to be heard and what gets left behind?

The work at the end opens toward a conversation taking place in this hybrid, non-geological space of listening among the different parts of the audience. The conversation departs from nine questions but does not have an apriori fixed ending point, the timeframe is determined by the bradcast time but the audience is invited to linger or continue to talk after the broadcast is finished.

Radio is both a reference field and frame and a technology within the context of this project. To invite people’s ‘radio voice’ and use its conventions of dramaturgical structuring as well as to tap into the ability and politics of radio. Taking advantage of its ability to go right through walls, be picked up by anyone, and the uncanny ability of the voice without a body that is capable of establishing intimacy at a distance

A publication developed in collaboration with irish artist and book designer Kasia Kaminska entitled ‘Speak Like No One In Particular - a guide’ also documents the research and accompanies the work. For more details on the publication or to buy a copy click [here]
